Synopsis

A vampire never gets old, but neither do his enemies. When a figure from Ethan's dark past makes a splashy debut in Chicago, Merit and her Master don't know whether he's friend or foe. But they'll have to figure it out soon because trouble is brewing in the Windy City.

At an exclusive society soirée attended by the upper echelons of the human and supernatural worlds, Merit and Ethan barely stop the assassination of a guest. When the target turns out to be a shady businessman with a criminal edge, Merit suspects a human vendetta. But the assassins have fangs.

The connections to Chicago's Houses go deeper than Merit knows, and one wrong move could be her last.

Review

Wherever Merit goes, trouble always seems to follow.  Black tie functions attended by Chicago's social elite aren't safe.  Even wearing a gown that belong on a red carpet, Merit is able to thwarts an assassination attempt on a a party attendee. Question is, who's behind this latest attack and how is it connected to Chicagoland's vampires.

The Chicagoland Vampires' series, is an absolute favorite of mine.  Chloe Neill puts together the perfect balance of action, humor, sex, and wonderful characters.  While most series tend to get stale around book 10, Chloe keeps this series fresh with each new book.  And DARK DEBT is no different.  I also felt that this book brought the series back to it's real roots.  It's back focusing more on the vampiric houses of Chicago.

This book turned Merit and Ethan's relationship on it's head.  Though Merit is really coming into her own vampire powers, Ethan has always been the rock in their relationship.  An unforeseen person from Ethan's past, turns their world upside down.  Now it's Merit's turn to be the strong one.  Even when Ethan's greatest foe comes after Merit, she has his back.  Ethan's fully lets Merit in emotionally.  I really loved these two together.  Their chemistry is so steamy and all encompassing.  No matter what tragic things happen, these two have each other.  They have proven over and over again that their love can defeat just about anything.

While this book gave me plenty of Merit and Ethan, DARK DEBT was really about the series' secondary characters. Against my better judgment, I have always love Morgan.  He has done some terrible things in the past, but he really get the chance to turn things around.  We got to see the charming Morgan, that we haven't seen in several books.  Mallory and Catcher, really got to take a front seat in this book, as well.  Mallory has fought really hard to earn everyone's trust back.  She is given the chance to come to Cadogan's magical rescue.  I was so happy to see Mallory and Catcher's romantic relationship taken to the next level. I also really enjoyed that Merit got some resolution with her father, since they have always had such a strained relationship.

Sophie Eastlake's narration, as always, was real treat.  She has this perfect dark quality to her voice that lends well to the story.  She has created very divers, unique voices for each character.  She does such an amazing job telling this story, that the listener can get lost in the audiobook.  DARK DEBT is full of deep emotion, from agonizing fear to heart stealing love, and Sophie hits these emotion out of the park!

When Chicagoland's the magical community comes together, there aren't many things that can stand in their way.  I just love these deep characters that the author has given us.  I was really happy that this book had the feeling of the earlier books in the series.  The constant drama and action kept me hooked, and I could put this audiobook down. Chloe Neill has a real knack for setting up story surprises that the reader never sees coming.  DARK DEBT has the perfect combination of  mystery, action, and characters that you can't help but love. The Chicagoland Vampire series has done it again!  I can't wait to see what the next book in this series has to offer.  Hopefully, we'll get more Jonah.

Review

And here, I'd finally started to think that Merit and Ethan were on solid ground.  They were the closet that they have ever been to a functional romantic couple.  Usually, it's Merit that has a tendency to stumble in their relationship.  This time it was Ethan that needed someone to catch him.  His secrets were what pushed them a part this time.  It was nice to see that Merit got to be the strong one in the relationship.  This brings a new balance to their relations ship, that I feel has been lacking.  I liked getting the chance to see a more human sure for Ethan.

And as much as I love Merit and Ethan, this story would be nothing without it's secondary characters. They add so many unique layers to this story.  It's rare that you find a series with such a strong supporting cast.  I was happy to see that Mallory's friendship with Merit and her relationship with Catcher back on track again.  It's been a hard fought road for her, after the mistakes that she has made.  And who doesn't love the Omsbudies, especially Jeff!  He's smart, funny, and geeky, which makes him dreamy to most bookish girls.  I think this sexy shifter needs his own series. I'm also a massive Johan fan.  He is absolutely leading man material.  I like how we got to see his more relaxed side, especially at the convention.

I just can't get enough of Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires Series.  These books stand out in sea of common paranormal romance.  I love this books snark, adventure, and heart.  It's a book that holds deep emotion, while also not taking it's self to seriously.  I enjoy the humor in a story, that could be otherwise to heavy with drama and emotions.  I got so caught up in this story, I can't put it down.

I have quickly grown to love Sophie Eastlake's narration of this series.  I'm such a stickler for changing narrator mid-series, that I'm not sure I gave her a fair shot in the beginning.  I am now a total convert.  She is the Chicagoland Vampire Series now.  She pulls off the perfect Merit, strong, snarky, and sexy.  She also has formed distinct voices for each character. Sophie is able to convey this series strong emotions from humor to it's strong heart. Her diction and pace are fantastic as well. She really pulls the listener into the story, and keeps them interested.

A high-fave to Chloe Neill for keeping this long running series so fresh and clever.  The Chicagoland Vampire Series is, hands down, one of the best Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance series out there!  I was so emotionally drawn into this story, that I couldn't put it down.  BLOOD GAMES is smart, snarky, and adventurous. It's both well written and well performed. If you are interested in fast-paced, edge of your seat paranormal experience, this is the book for you.  As always, I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

Synopsis

Since Merit was turned into a vampire, and the protector of Chicago’s Cadogan House, it’s been a wild ride. She and Master vampire Ethan Sullivan have helped make Cadogan’s vampires the strongest in North America, and forged ties with paranormal folk of all breeds and creeds, living or dead…or both.

But now those alliances are about to be tested. A strange and twisted magic has ripped through the North American Central Pack, and Merit’s closest friends are caught in the crosshairs. Gabriel Keene, the Pack Apex, looks to Merit and Ethan for help. But who—or what—could possibly be powerful enough to out-magic a shifter?

Merit is about to go toe to toe, and cold steel to cold heart, to find out.

Review

This book was such a breath of fresh air to the Chicagoland Vampires series! Most series tend to fizzle out and become stale by their 9th book, but not this one.  A creative new storyline teamed up with my favorite cast of sexy paranormals, makes this book my favorites of the series.

Vamps and weres and fae...oh my! Chloe Neill has brought all kinds of fantastic supes to the table in this book. While past books touch on other mythological races, this one really dives into their rich history.  A new creepy crawly has come to town and a wolf has disappeared. Unfortunately, this all goes down during the pack's massive celebration that Ethan and Merit attend.  The pack takes full advantage of their house guest, and put Merit on the case.

It was nice to finally see Merit and Ethan is a stable romantically. We finally get to see them be happy, and completely all in their relationship.  Theses two are more powerful when together!  Also, I love that we get to spend so much time with the pack.  They are so intriguing and different from other authors weres.  I actually with she would give them their own series.  Their connection to magic is probably my favorite part of their subculture.  They have done so much to help Mallory get back to as normal as she can be.  She's getting her life back on track, and I couldn't be more happy to see her with Catcher.  As much as I love Merit and Ethan, it's their group of friends that bring this series to another level!

I'm slowly becoming a Sophie Eastlake convert, and I almost hate to admit that.  As I have said in the past, that I can't stand when a series changes narrators.  The listeners put a certain voice to each character, and when that is disrupted it can be distracting.  But after several Chicagoland Vampires audiobooks with Sophie as the narrator, I'm starting to really enjoy her narration style.  When I actually read this series, my brain is finally starting to hear the characters in her voices.  She has formed distinct voices for each character, and is able to convey this series strong emotions.

WILD THINGS is a great edition to the Chicagoland Vampires series.  It was a great combination of action, passion, and adventure!  I cannot wait for the release BLOOD GAMES later in the year.  We'll see what Merit and her crew have in store for us next!

Synopsis

In a city full of vampires, trouble never sleeps.

At the tender age of twenty-seven, Merit became a sword-wielding vampire. Since then, she’s become the protector of her House, watched Chicago nearly burn to the ground, and seen her Master fall and rise. Now she’ll see her mettle—and her metal—tested like never before.

It started with two . . . Two rogues vanishing without a trace. Someone is targeting Chicago’s vampires, and anyone could be next. With their house in peril, Merit and her Master, the centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, must race to stop the disappearances. But as they untangle a web of secret alliances and ancient evils, they realize their foe is more familiar, and more powerful, than they could have ever imagined.

Review

I have been eagerly awaiting book 7 in this series, since I finished the final chapter of BITING COLD.  Most authors tend to lose steam by the time they get to book 6 or 7, but Chloe Neill isn't that kind of author.  She has kept the storyline strong, smart, and captivating!  Merit and her crew have overcome so many obstacle.  Though the road a head of them is going to be hard, it seems that things are headed back in the right direction.

There is a lot going on in Cadogan House.  Ethan Sullivan, their fearless leader and Merit's vampire lover, is back in the house and in full force.  The house is also a buzz with their decision to leave the Greenwich Presidium.  Her friends are safe and on the road healing physically and emotionally.  So what, the GP is dead set on dismantling and destroying them.  Who cares, if the new mayor and most of the citizens of Chicago are against the vampires.  And never mind, the string of strange vampire deaths a crossed the city.  I get my Merit and Ethan back!

I think that my favorite part of this series is how normal Chloe's vampires are.  It makes me more drawn into the story.  At it's heart, this series is about death, love, and being a part of a family.  I love the people that Merit chooses to surround herself with as well.  I was really happy to see Mallory get back on her feet.  She hit rock bottom, and now she is fighting to get her self back to somewhat normal.  I just hope that there is a point where she and Catcher can get back to each other.  The shifter also play a pretty big role in this book.  I adore all of the shifters and really enjoyed seeing Jeff step up.  I have a total geek crush on Jeff, and love him more with every book.

When a series changes narrators mid-series, it is always hard for me to adjust.  They previous narrator was fantastic, one of my all-time favorites!  I picked it up, because of who had been narrating the series.  Each character was the unique voice that the past narrator gave them.  We have had Sophie Eastlake for two books now.  My opinion of her narration style would be totally different if she had narrated the series all a long.  Each character has a new sound and a style of speech, which makes me slightly crazy.  However, she does a great job telling the story.  Her voice is smooth.  Her diction and pace are great as well.  I'm just not all that happy with her character choices.  I just wished that I hadn't had the previous narrators narration to compare it to.

Even though this audiobook is slightly tarnished with it's change in narrator.  I still love this series and will continue purchasing it on audiobook format.  It is full of messy politics, big-time action, and is sexy as hell. Big things are still ahead for Merit and her cast of merry friends.  I cannot wait to see what Chloe Neill has in store for us in book 8, BITING BAD.  It's due in stores August 6th in paperback and audiobook formats.  Check back next week for my review of book 8, seeing are an early release copy made it's way into my mail box this week!

DRINK DEEP Blog Tour & Contest - Interview with Merit

Publishers Description: Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can’t tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city iself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven’t been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay low for a bit, and let the mortals calm down.

That’s when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black-and things really start getting ugly.

Chicago’s mayor insists it’s nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She’ll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who’s behind this, and stop them before it’s too late for vampires and humans alike.

********************

Hey readers! With upcoming release of Chloe Neill's newest Chicagoland Vampire novel DRINK DEEP, I have invited Cadogan very own Sentinel, Merit, to the Nice Girls Blog for a little Q&A. Also in celebration of my Birthday today, I'm giving away an eBook copy of DRINK DEEP!!!

********************

Welcome Metit! We're excited to have you here at the Nice Girls Blog. Thank you for taking time out of you ass-kicking schedule to chat with us!

Q: What is your favorite part of being a vampire?

Merit: Being able to eat whatever I want whenever I want and not gain a pound. The metabolism is awesome!

Q: Knowing what you know now, would you become a vampire again if given the choice?

Merit: That's a hard question. I've been given the gift of immortality, but I've also had to completely change my life and my lifestyle, and give up everything I knew before. I'd have to think about that one.

Q: What is your favorite book from Cadogan Library and why?

Merit: There are some books of vampire literature--gothic stories written by vampires for vampires--that humans don't even know existed. It's the kind of stuff I would have loved to read while in graduate school! Think Jane Eyre with vampires.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have been give since you've became a vampire and who gave it to you?

Merit: Ethan told me once that I'd have to make a decision--pick a side between vampires and humans and commit to one or the other. I think that's true in a lot of areas of life. You can't stand around and wait for things to happen. You have to do them yourself.

Q: You seem to love your local Chicago eateries. Where is you favorite place to eat?

Merit: I love Crust, a pizza restaurant in Wicker Park. And Rosebud Trattoria. The vodka sauce is LEGENDARY.

Q: If your fellow initiates were to plan the perfect birthday party for you, who would attend, where would it be held, and what flavor of cake would they choose?

Merit: Can we have the vodka sauce at Rosebud Trattoria? No, I kid. Mallory would be there, obviously, and my grandfather. Maybe my sister, and definitely Jeff, Luc and Lindsey. And Margot and Katherine from the House. I'm pretty flexible on the location, but there must be chocolate cake. Lots of chocolate cake!

Merit: Thanks for having me today!

Merit, we really appreciate you stopping by to answer a few questions! Also thank to everyone for stopping by on this DRINK DEEP Blog Tour Stop, and if you haven't purchased DRINK DEEP run right out and get it!
